Owen County Indiana Homesteaders
What is a Homesteader?

Originally homesteaders were people involved in the westward expansion of the U.S.A. Upon passage of the Homestead Act of 1862, anyone who had never taken up arms against the U.S. government, this made those who had fought on the side of the South ineligible, and were over 21 or the head of a household could obtain land in a three step process. They would file an application to claim a federal land grant. They were then required to reside on the land for five years and show evidence of having made improvements. Because the grant only provided land, the new residents would have to be completely self-sufficient. They had to find their own water source, build a shelter, plant gardens and hunt for food.

Today many have found a need to learn the skills of the original homesteaders. There can be pride in a well operated homestead in order to be self sufficient .

It is our aim to build a self-reliant lifestyle working to create our own independent survival necessities.
